War and Peace
The long history of the Catholic Church has made it a significant actor in the affairs of war and peace around the world. The Catholic Church is one of the founders and most significant proponents of just war doctrine, and these conditions for just military action are often cited by both Catholic and non-Catholics alike. The Church is also a global proponent for peace among and within nations, especially in terms of disarmament and human dignity. The United States bishops, in particular, were extremely vocal in their opposition to nuclear weapons proliferation during the 1980s. With its unique status as both a church and internationally recognized state, the Catholic Church remains influential in efforts for peace throughout the globe.
