Berkley Center Film Screening and Discussion of "An African Answer"

October 31, 2011
9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. EDT
Location: Berkley Center Map

The Berkley Center hosted a film screening of the documentary An African Answer, followed by a discussion with the two men featured in the film, Pastor James Wuye and Imam Muhammad Ashafa of Nigeria. The film focuses on the widespread conflict in Kenya following disputed elections at the end of 2007.
Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye—former militia leaders turned peacemakers from Nigeria—were invited to mediate in the worst-affected district. The film depicts their dramatic bid to bring healing and reconciliation after death and destruction, and the dynamics of an effective, African approach to conflict resolution between rival ethnic groups. It demonstrates that durable, peaceful coexistence between communities formerly in conflict is feasible in Kenya and beyond. Above all, the film gives hope that grassroots communities can reject violence and rebuild peace and prosperity.

This event was co-sponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and Georgetown's Master of Arts Program in Conflict Resolution.
