Cornelio Sommaruga is honorary chair of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining, having served as its president from 2000 to 2008. Sommaruga was president of the International Committee for the Red Cross between 1987 and 1999. Since 2000 he has also served as president of Initiatives of Change, chairman of the Karl Popper Foundation, vice-chairman of the Foundation for the Future, board chairman of the International Cancer Foundation, and board member for the Open Society Institute and Accentus Foundation. Sommaruga worked in the Swiss civil service from 1960 to 1986, followed by two years as State Secretary for External Economic Affairs. He studied in Zurich, Paris, and Rome, eventually earning a Ph.D. in law from the University of Zurich.
