The Hon. Douglas Roche, Order of Canada, is a Canadian politician and diplomat who has specialized in peace and human security issues throughout his career. He is the founder and chairman emeritus of the Middle Powers Initiative. A former Canadian senator and member of parliament, he also served the Holy See as a special advisor for disarmament and security. Pope John Paul II presented Roche with the Papal Medal for his service. He was the Canadian ambassador for disarmament from 1984 to 1989 and served as chairman of the United Nations Disarmament Committee in 1988. In addition, Roche is a former visiting professor at the University of Alberta and the author of 22 books, including The United Nations in the 21st Century (2015), How We Stopped Loving the Bomb (2011) and The Human Right to Peace (2003).
