Jill Sternberg is a peace activist who has spent decades working in Timor-Leste. Sternberg most recently worked for the HAK Association, dedicated to upholding human rights and seeking justice for crimes again humanity in Timor-Leste; she also helped found the Peace and Democracy Foundation in the newly established democracy. She has served as an election observer in Timor-Leste since 1999 with the Solidarity Observer Mission for East Timor and has done other peacebuilding work with the Peace Brigades North America Project and the Balkan Peace Team. In 2005 she was the Gamaliel Chair in Peace and Justice at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where she was previously the first graduate of the university's Peace Studies program. Sternberg earned an MA from the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
