Rik Torfs has been a professor at Catholic University of Leuven since 1988 and was Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law from 1994 to 2003. Since 2000, he has also been a visiting professor at both the University of Strasbourg and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Torfs is the author of nearly 350 articles and numerous books dealing with canon law, law, and church and state relationships. In addition, Torfs is editor of the European Journal for Church and State Research and an active member of the Board of Directors of the European Consortium for State-Church Research. Torfs also works as a newspaper columnist and host of his own television program. In 2009, Torfs became a member of the Commission for Intercultural Dialogue of the Belgian government. He studied law at Catholic University of Leuven and University of Strasburg, where he specialized in canon law.
