Jose Casanova gave a series of prestigious lectures on the sociology of religion in Beijing in August 2010. The lectures, available here in draft format, will be published as a book. They cover the historical origins of the idea of secularization and the shifting relationship between the religious and the secular in the United States, China, and around the world. The lectures were prepared and delivered as part of the seventh Summer Institute for Scientific Study of Religion, which gathers leading scholars of of religion from across China for two weeks of intensive study.
