Health in Africa and Faith Communities: What Do We Need to Know?

Faith-inspired organizations (FIOs) and communities are important providers of healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa (as in other world regions). Quality can be high and the focus is often on serving the very poor and marginalized, but FIO work is rarely treated as a central part of national and global health strategies and systems. Uncertainties, misunderstandings, and stereotypes about faith roles in health matter because they hamper dialogue and partnerships, among faith institutions and governments, and also with non-profit and for-profit entities and multilateral institutions working on...

Malaria and Faith: Building Strong Partnerships

A global program to combat malaria has attracted major international funding and is showing promising progress. A wide range of faith actors (notably major faith-inspired organizations and community leaders well-primed on anti-malaria strategies, alongside anti-poverty advocates) play significant roles in both program execution and advocacy, at global, national, and community levels. This brief, drawing on a 2009 Berkley Center/World Faiths Development Dialogue report, “Malaria: Scoping New Partnerships,” highlights...

First Look: Faith and Environmental Action in Cambodia

In celebration of Earth Day 2013, this report by WFDD represents a preliminary exploration of faith-inspired environmental initiatives in Cambodia. Environmental issues, especially deforestation, are becoming more visible in Cambodia and are a focus of considerable international concern and attention because Cambodia sits on some of the world's hotspots for biological diversity and because of mounting concerns about forest cutting.

Global Institutions of Religion: Ancient Movers, Modern Shakers

Focused on the intersection of religious and other global institutions, in this book Katherine Marshall combines concise introduction with insightful analysis into the role of religious institutions in world affairs. It addresses religion's role with key issues such as human rights, human security, international development and humanitarian relief, climate change, and moral responsibilities. Marshall also delves into the new forms that religious institutions are taking, their fit with human rights and democratic ideals, and their changing nature in plural societies. Global Institutions of...

Faith in Action: Empowering the Poor to Reach Universal Energy Access

This report, produced in collaboration between WFDD and the United Nations Foundation (UNF), highlights the roles of faith-inspired actors in eliminating energy poverty worldwide and emphasizes the need for a unique, more coordinated faith-inspired approach. Drawing from a background paper circulated among the participants of the October 2, 2012 workshop, "Faith in Action: Empowering the Poor to Reach Universal Energy Access," this final version has been updated with their comments, along with workshop findings and conclusions.
