Exchange Visit to Mauritania by Senegalese Faith Leaders

Religious Engagement in Maternal and Child Health

April 12-16, 2016

From April 12-16, 2016, a group of Senegalese religious leaders and a representative from the Senegalese Ministry of Health and Social Action visited Nouakchott, Mauritania with an aim to exchange experiences on engaging religious leadership in promoting maternal and child health. These Senegalese religious leaders are part of the Cadre des Religieux pour la Santé et le Développement (CRSD).  In Nouakchott, the group met with diverse actors (government, religious leaders, development agencies, etc.) to discuss the intersection of faith and family planning. The visit allowed both the Senegalese and Mauritanians to discuss the importance of religious engagement to improving maternal and child health, and particularly the roles that religious leaders can and should play in promoting birth spacing.
