Normative Orders Collaborative Workshops

Preparatory to the Moral Innovation Seminar, the collaborative held three workshops on this topic in spring 2014. The first two were designed to help begin to bridge disciplinary divides in talking about such questions—among philosophers, sociologists, theologians, and historians. On February 26, Professor José Casanova of the Sociology Department and the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, presented a paper on “Encounters with the Religious ‘Other’: From One True Religion to Interreligious Dialogue.”  Then on March 26, Prof. Adam Rothman (History), presenting some of his work in progress, spoke on "The Abolition of Slavery: A Case of Historical Moral Innovation."
The third and final workshop of spring 2014 focused on Professor Richardson’s book manuscript, Articulating the Moral Community: Towards a Constructive Ethical Pragmatism, which develops some of the key ideas that underlie the seminar’s design. This took place April 25. Critical comments were offered by Maggie Little (Georgetown), Talbot Brewer (University of Virginia), and Michael Smith (Princeton).

In the years following the Moral Innovation Seminar, follow-up conferences will be held at Georgetown, Frankfurt, and Fudan. For more information on the Normative Orders program, contact Henry Richardson.
