Bassam Tibi, author of Islam's Predicament with Modernity (2009), argued that "cultural tensions not dealt with and tamed" can escalate and lead to political conflict. In this lunchtime meeting, he discussed how disagreements over values systems between Islam and the West are not a clash of civilizations but can be resolved through intra-civilizational dialogue. Tibi also critically distinguished Islamism from Islam and argued that there is a war of ideas between Islamism and the vision of democratic peace.

About Bassam Tibi

Bassam Tibi is a scholar considered the founder of the school of thought known as “Euro-Islam” and was visiting Koret Foundation Fellow at Stanford University during 2011. He was Professor of International Relations at the University of Göttingen (Germany) from 1973-2009. He has been a visiting scholar at various universities on five continents and during summer 2010 was a visiting senior fellow at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies in Washington, DC. He is the author of 26 books in German, and six original books written in English. Outside of academia Tibi had worked in many institutions, including five years as a member of the Goethe-assembly and five years as a member of the Bosch Colleges for postgraduate funding. In 1995, German President Roman Herzog awarded Tibi the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class, and in 2003 Tibi shared the annual Award of the Swiss Foundation for Western Consciousness.
