As part of the Berkley Center’s Education and Social Justice Project, in July 2010 undergraduate student Brian Dillon interviewed Anne Candelaria, former managing director of the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED) in the Philippines. She is a leader in alleviating poverty through educational opportunity, and Candelaria discussed her work and internship opportunities at Ateneo with Georgetown students at this lunchtime discussion. In both the interview and event Candelaria addressed the shift in ACED’s work from teacher training to integrated initiatives throughout a school system and stressed the importance of connecting with and respecting local political leadership, as well as the challenges posed by poverty and migration among public school students in the Philippines.
