Before arriving at Münster, Kattan taught at the University of Balamand from 2001 to 2004. His areas of interest are hermeneutics and Christian-Muslim dialogue, and he has also written on the history of Christianity and the Orthodox experience in the Middle East. Kattan headed a project called "Beyond the Centres: Religion and Enlightenment Based on the Examples of Islam and of Greek and Arabic Christianity in South-Eastern Europe and the Levant," which explored the idea that the Enlightenment was not necessarily opposed to religion.
