Bishop Mar Awa Royel is a bishop of the Assyrian Church of the East, presiding over the Diocese of California. He is the secretary of the Holy Synod of the Assyrian Church of the East and is one of five trustees of the Assyrian Church of the East Relief Organization. He is the president of the Commission on Inter-Church Relations and Educational Development. Royel is the author of Mysteries of the Kingdom: The Sacraments of the Assyrian Church of the East (2011), a treatise on the theology of the Assyrian Church of the East regarding the seven sacraments. He obtained his B.A. from Loyola University Chicago and earned his second B.A. in sacred theology from University of St. Mary on the Lake. He later received his License of Sacred Theology and doctorate from Pontifical Oriental University in Rome.
