Lord David Alton, Lord Alton of Liverpool, is an independent crossbench life peer, a professor and director of the Foundation for Citizenship of Liverpool John Moores University, and chairman of the Christian Heritage Centre. In 1972 he was elected a city councillor of Liverpool, making him at age 21 the youngest person ever to hold a city councillor position. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1979 as a Liberal but stood down in 1997 after his party adopted a pro-choice stance in 1992. He was then nominated to the House of Lords, where he speaks about human rights and religious liberty. He co-founded the Jubilee Campaign, which defends Jewish and Christian dissidents in Eastern Europe. The author of ten books and reports on human rights in various countries, Alton has received several international awards and volunteers with many human rights advocacy groups.
