Elizabeth
L. Young is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University
of Michigan and was a summer 2015 doctoral fellow with the Religious Freedom Project. Her research focuses on nationalism, particularly in the
Middle East and North Africa. In her doctoral dissertation, she examines the
relationship between national identity, Islam, and democratization in
post-revolutionary Tunisia. Additional research interests include
electoral politics, secessionism, state formation, and citizenship. Young holds a M.A. in sociology from the University of Michigan and a
B.A. in religion from Haverford College. Previously, she worked on
governance and electoral programs in the Middle East and North Africa. She has also served as an international election observer in Albania, Bosnia
& Herzegovina, Tunisia, and Yemen.
