Feras Hamza is associate professor in international studies at the University of Wollongong in Dubai. He previously taught Middle Eastern Studies at the American University in Dubai. Hamza worked at the Institute of Ismaili Studies from 2003 to 2008, initially as a postdoctoral fellow and then as research associate, teaching courses on Islamic history, the Qur’an, and the tafsir (interpretation/exegesis) tradition. He was principal editor of the Anthology of Qurʾanic Commentaries vol 1: on the Nature of the Divine (2008) and has published a complete translation of the popular Muslim Qurʾan commentary Tafsir al-Jalalayn (2004), a first volume of Kashani’s Ta’wilat al-Qur’an, as well as contributions to The Ismailis: An Illustrated History (2008) and the Encyclopedia of Religion. Hamza completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford in 2001 with a dissertation on afterlife theology in the early Muslim community, having previously earned degrees in Hispanic studies and Russian from London University.
