Joan Chittister is a Benedictine sister and author of some 40 books. She is the Executive Director of Benetvision, a resource and research center for contemporary spirituality, and past president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. She was prioress of the Benedictine Sisters for 12 years. Chittister is a regular columnist for the National Catholic Reporter and a founding member of the International Peace Council, as well as co-chair of the Global Peace Initiative for Women. She has been recognized by universities and national organizations for her work for justice, peace, and equality for women in church and society. A theologian, social psychologist, and communication theorist, she takes seriously her teaching ministry. Her lectures are popular around the world. In 2009, she was selected by the TED organization to be a member of the Council of Conscience, a group of spiritual leaders selected to draft the Charter for Compassion.
