Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari is a Tibetan diplomat who served as special envoy of the Dalai Lama for several decades, both in Washington, D.C. and in negotiations with the Chinese government, until his resignation in 2012. Gyari had previously been elected as the speaker of the Tibetan parliament in exile. He also served in several capacities with the International Campaign for Tibet, including president and executive chairman of the board, from 1990 to 2014. He is chairman of the board of the Conservancy for Tibetan Art and Culture. Gyari helped found the Allied Committee, Institute for Asian Democracy, International Network of Engaged Buddhists, and Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization; he served as a nonresident senior fellow in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings and a research scholar in Asian studies at Georgetown University. He is recognized as a reincarnated Buddhist lama in the Nyingma lineage.
