Maria del Carmen Cruz Senovilla is a professor and researcher in the Education Department of Universidad Centroamericana "José Simeón Cañas" (UCA) . She began training rural citizens as teachers during the Salvadorian civil war. She ultimately created the first popular education system in the country, founding sixteen popular schools. She remains committed to the communities in which these schools were located and to the tenants of popular education. She has a doctorate in education from the National University of Distance Education and a degree in special education from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. She is trained in various education-related fields, including the improvement of education systems and the improvement of teacher development systems.
