Matthew Butler is associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin. He is author of Popular Piety and Political Identity in Mexico’s Cristero Rebellion: Michoacán, 1927-1929 (2004) and editor of Faith and Impiety in Revolutionary Mexico (2007).
