Matthew Ippel graduated from Georgetown's Walsh School of Foreign Service in 2013 with a major in regional and comparative studies, focusing on development in the Middle East and Latin America. He participated in the Berkley Center's Junior Year Abroad Network while studying in Amman, Jordan, during the fall 2011 semester and in San Salvador, El Salvador, during the spring 2012 semester.
