Professor Njabulo Simakahle Ndebele is a leader in South African higher education and an acclaimed writer. He serves as chair of the Mandela-Rhodes Foundation, and Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg. He served earlier as Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Capetown. Born in 1948 in Johannesburg, he studied English at the University of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland, and at Churchill College, Cambridge. He was also Scholar in Residence at the Ford Foundation in New York. His novels include The Cry of Winnie Mandela.
