Norman Tanner, S.J. is a professor of church history at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He joined the Jesuits in 1961, then received his Ph.D. in history from Oxford University, where he taught from 1978 to 2003. Fr. Tanner is an expert in the history of church councils and edited the key translation Decrees of the Ecumenical Councils (1990). His other publications include Vatican II: The Essential Texts (2012), The Church in the Later Middle Ages (2008), The Church and the World: Gaudium et spes, Inter mirifica (2005) and The Councils of the Church: A Short History (2001).
