Cardinal Robert McElroy has served as bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of San Diego since 2015, having previously served as auxiliary bishop and vicar general for the archdiocese of San Francisco and pastor of St. Gregory Parish in San Mateo. Appointed a cardinal in 2022, he will be installed as the new archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington in March 2025. His publications include two books, The Search for an American Public Theology: The Contribution of John Courtney Murray (1989) and Morality and American Foreign Policy: The Role of Ethics in International Affairs (1992), and numerous articles for America Magazine.
