Russell McCutcheon is a professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama. From 2001 to 2009, he served as chair of the department and will resume that role in the coming year. He previously taught at Southwest Missouri State University (Springfield; now Missouri State University) from 1996 to 2001; he taught at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 1993 to 1996. His research focuses on issues of theory in the study of religion, and specifically in the social and political utility of the term "religion." He is co-author of a collection of essays, The Sacred is the Profane (Oxford University Press, 2013). His next book, Entanglements: Marking Place in the Field of Religion, will be published in 2013 (Equinox Publishers, UK). McCutcheon holds degrees from the Queen's University and the University of Toronto.
