He grew up in Esquipulas, Chiquimula, Guatemala, which is the home of the Black Christ at the Basilica of Esquipulas and a main pilgrimage town near the border with El Salvador. After training to be an accountant, Hernandez switched paths and became a teacher, working in two schools as well as an institution for advanced education geared towards adults. Additionally, he led an ecumenical youth group, which attracted both Catholic and evangelical youth, that raised support for a nearby orphanage.
