Shahrough Akhavi is adjunct professor of political science at Columbia University and distinguished professor emeritus of political science at the University of South Carolina. He has done field research in Iran and Egypt with a focus on the sociology of Islam. Among his publications are Religion and Politics in Contemporary Iran: Clergy-State Relations in the Pahlavi Period (SUNY, 1980) and The Middle East: The Politics of the Sacred and Secular (Zed, 2009).
