Dr. Shirley A. Mullen is the fifth president of Houghton College. She previously worked and taught at Westmont College, where she was provost from 2002 to 2006 and Professor of History from 1984 through 2006; she has also taught at the University of Minnesota and Bethel College (Minnesota). In addition, Mullen was president of the Conference on Faith and History from 2004-2006 and is a member of the American Historical Association, Hume Society, and Conference on British Studies. She is the author of Organized Freethought: The Religion of Unbelief in Victorian England (1987), as well as numerous articles and chapters in edited books. Mullen holds a BA (summa cum laude) from Houghton College, MA in history from the University of Toronto, PhD in history from the University of Minnesota, and PhD in philosophy from the University of Wales.
