Ambassador J. Stapleton Roy is a career ambassador in the US Foreign Service (retired), having previously served as ambassador to Singapore (1984-86), the People's Republic of China (1991-95), and Indonesia (1996-99). He retired in 2001 from a post as Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Research. Since then he has been a member - and currently vice chairman - of Kissinger Associates, Inc., a strategic consulting group; Roy became the director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in 2008. In addition, he is chairman of the United States Asia Pacific Council and a director of Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold and Conocophillips Alaska, Inc. Roy also serves as a Trustee of the Asia Foundation and board member with the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy of Georgetown University and the American Academy of Diplomacy.
