Br. Stephen Msele, SJ, is a Jesuit from the East African Province and founder of Undugu Family Groups, an organization devoted to sport and culture with hundreds of chapters in four countries. Msele spent his novitiate in Zambia and subsequently earned a Master’s degree in Philosophy in Ireland. While there he founded the International Student Alliance, later renamed Urafiki (Swahili for "friendship"), focused on building friendship through sports and other activities. He taught at a high school in Mwanza, Tanzania, before earning a Master’s degree in Theology in 1987; Msele then moved to Dadoma, Tanzania, to serve as a priest. While studying in the Philippines for a Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies he was inspired to start Undugu Family. After getting his degree, he returned to Mwanza to be a parish priest in a Jesuit Refugee Service camp. He has been working at OCER since 2006.
