Author: Drew Christiansen

July 19, 2019

In America online Rev. Drew Christiansen, S.J., reflects on the legacy of Daniel Callahan, an independent scholar who turned over new ground at the frontier where ethics meets medicine, law, and religion. While Callahan had ended his formal affiliation with the Catholic Church in mid-life, Christiansen argues that Callahan remained someone who approached ethics and philosophy with a Catholic imagination. In 2011, America bestowed on Callahan and his wife Sidney the Matteo Ricci Award in tribute to their “creative partnership in ideas and in values.”
