Published as part of the proceedings of the seventy-seventh annual convention of the Catholic Theological Society of America, this talk by Senior Fellow Andrew Prevot claims that freedom is elusive. As soon we seem to take hold of it—whether conceptually, institutionally, or spiritually—we discover it again, only at a distance. This distance, though, does not suppress the human passion for freedom but renews it. The struggle continues. This slogan expresses another central claim of this talk. By emphasizing the elusiveness of freedom, Prevot's goal is not to encourage pessimism or despair but rather to motivate action. His argument is against self-satisfaction: the false comfort of feeling oneself free enough already.
