Empowering U.S. International Religious Freedom Policy to Contribute to American National Security

Author: Thomas Farr

September 18, 2014

Thomas Farr, director of the Religious Freedom Project, testified before the National Security Sub-Committee of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee on September 18, 2014. Farr commended the U.S. State Department for taking positive steps to promote religious freedom. However, he criticizes the ad hoc nature of these steps, arguing that a delayed response endangers religious minorities living abroad. Farr notes several areas for improvement, including providing Ambassador David Saperstein with more resources and issuing a presidential policy directive on international religious freedom.
