UN Authority and the Morality of Force

Berkley Center Senior Fellow Eric Patterson and former BC graduate researcher Ilan Cooper argue that the just war principle of "legitimate authority" calls into question claims that the United Nations has the moral authority and practical capabilities to lead the international community when it comes to violent conflict. They argue that the UN presents many contradictions, such as claiming the authority to sanction when violence is legal and moral (jus ad bellum) but refusing to accept responsibility for the misdeeds of blue-helmeted peacekeepers (jus in bello) in places like Srebrenica and the Congo.
