Counseling, Social-Emotional Learning, and Jesuit Values in Education

In summer 2023, Renee Vongai Mutare (SFS’24) conducted research at St. Martin de Porres Primary School in Belize City, Belize, through the Education and Social Justice Project, a joint project of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service at Georgetown University. During her three weeks, she observed and interviewed students, teachers, parents, and counselors working with Project HEAL, a non-profit organization providing counseling services and life skills training to students at St. Martin de Porres Primary School. Her research explored the role of counseling and social-emotional learning in education as a reflection of the community’s commitment to Jesuit values.
