Interested in the role of religious leaders in generating respect for humanitarian law and human rights in armed conflict? Join us for a Meet and Greet with Dr. Ioana Cismas, co-director of the Centre for Applied Human Rights and a reader at the York Law School. An international law scholar, Cismas shared about her work researching and providing legal and policy advice in public international law, human rights law, international humanitarian law, law and religion, and transitional justice.

Cismas leads the funded research Generating Respect for Humanitarian Norms: The Influence of Religious Leaders on Parties to Armed Conflict (Generating Respect Project) and is currently a distinguished fellow with Georgetown Law’s Human Rights Institute. She was a research fellow at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from 2009 to 2013, and in 2013, she served as a consultant to the UN special rapporteur on transitional justice at the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. From 2009 to 2012, Cismas was legal advisor to a member of the Advisory Committee of the UN Human Rights Council.
