Religion, Migration, and Foreign Policy: Tensions in Immigration and Immigrant Integration

Panelists Listen to an Audience Question

March 14, 2008

In this panel participants discussed how immigrants are transforming religious life in their new countries. The event addressed tensions in immigration policy and explored the religious dimension of immigrant integration, particularly the impact of immigrants on religious diversity in the United States and the relationship between immigrants and mainstream religious denominations.

Panelists Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, Richard Land, Peggy Levitt, and Michael Werz discussed questions including: How important is the role of religion in the integration of immigrants in the United States? How are immigrants changing the religious diversity of the United States? Does the presence of immigrants from other religious backgrounds present challenges to mainstream denominations? Are there significant differences between the views on immigration and immigrant integration of religious leaders and those of the rank and file members of the denominations? What is the relationship between an immigrant's religion and his or her identity?

This event was co-sponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the Institute for the Study of International Migration.
