On June 19, 2011, Timothy Shah spoke to the Alexander Hamilton Society about the surge in religion's political influence virtually all parts of the world have witnessed since the 1950s and 1960s—halting and even reversing what seemed an unstoppable wave of political secularism.
Drawing on the themes of God's Century: Resurgent Religion and Global Politics (Norton, 2011), co-authored with RFP scholars Monica Toft and Dan Philpott, Shah also argued that according religious groups full freedom to participate in civil society and the political process—except where they are committed to violent extremism—is likely to yield positive outcomes for global freedom, security, and American interests. Shah's talk was part of a weekend seminar organized by Princeton University professor Aaron Friedberg and Hamilton Society executive director Mitchell Muncy. The Alexander Hamilton Society is a membership organization dedicated to promoting constructive debate on basic principles and contemporary issues in foreign, economic, and national security policy.
