Blessed Be the Peacemakers: Mourning Dekha Ibrahim Abdi

Dekha Ibrahim Abdi, a remarkable Kenyan woman who was admired around the world for her work for peace, died tragicaly on July 14, 2011. A year ago, Dekha was at Georgetown University helping to highlight the peace work of women inspired by their faith. The shrines at Kumano are among Japan's holiest places. Located in the mountains about 75 miles south of Osaka, Kumano Hongu, the main shrine (of three that make up Kumano), is indeed a magical place, full of history and legend. An ancient pilgrimage site with more than a thousand years of history, today it is a contemporary refuge, far from the noise and bustle of urban life.

The 2025 Education and Social Justice (ESJ) fellows, Madison Ross (C’27), Allie Schlicht (SFS’27), Cici Sprouse (C’26), and Stella Vance (C’26), showcased their respective research projects at the 2025 Global Social Justice Research Symposium on September 26. They were joined by fellows from the Laidlaw Undergraduate Leadership & Research Scholarship ProgramMaeve McKean Global Health AwardDavid F. Andretta Summer Research Fellowship, and Royden B. Davis Fellowship. This symposium was hosted by the CSJ and the Berkley Center at Georgetown University.
