Tariq Ramadan is professor of contemporary Islamic studies at Oxford University and also teaches at the Oxford Faculty of Theology. In addition, he holds scholarly positions with the University of Malaysia Perlis, Doshisha University, and the Faculty of Islamic Studies and the Research Centre of Islamic Legislation and Ethics in Qatar. He is president of the European Muslim Network. Ramadan advocates a self-confident Islam that both engages and critiques Western ideas and institutions. His works include Islam and the Arab Awakening (2012), The Quest for Meaning, Developing a Philosophy of Pluralism (2010), and Western Muslims and the Future of Islam (2003). He is the grandson of Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna, though his ideas do not always align with those of his grandfather's organization. A Swiss citizen of Egyptian descent, Ramadan holds degrees in philosophy and French literature and a Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Geneva. He has also studied at al-Azhar University.
