In this article distributed by Catholic News Service, Senior Research Fellow Amy Uelmen reflects on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, a teaching document on the political responsibilities of Catholics re-issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in late 2019. Uelmen explores the complexities of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, noting how the bishops reject the notion of Catholics as single-issue voters. At the same time, however, the U.S. bishops are careful to demarcate the ethical distinctions between different issues, such as the destruction of innocent human life. Uelmen concludes by exploring how the development of prudence, as outlined in the teaching document, can inform the Catholic call to live in holiness together.
