International Religious Freedom and Moral Responsibility

Author: Thomas Farr

May 1, 2012

What are the philosophical and moral dimensions of U.S. international religious freedom policy? What are the constituent rights within the concept of religious liberty, and how does this structure relate to the foreign policy obligations of the United States? In this chapter, RFP Director Tom Farr examines what we mean when we say "religious freedom," and grounds international religious freedom policy in the moral foundation of religious freedom as a human right. Farr also communicates its urgency with respect to the current strategic picture for U.S. national security. "International Religious Freedom and Moral Responsibility" appears in Challenges to Religious Liberty in the Twenty-First Century (2012, ed. Gerard V. Bradley).
