Parallel Reformations in Latin America: A Critical Review of David Martin's Interpretation of the Pentecostal Revolution
Author: José Casanova
January 1, 2018
In this chapter of David Martin's Sociology of Religion, a collection of essays edited by Hans Joas, Senior Fellow José Casanova offers a critique of David Martin's sociology of religion as it pertains to religious demographic changes in Latin America. Casanova argues that Martin did not pay enough attention to the general transformation of Latin America since the 1960s, particularly the transformation of Latin American Catholicism that followed the Second Vatican Council and the 1968 Latin American Bishops Conference in Medellin. Contra Martin, Casanova highlights the importance of parallel and mutually reinforcing Catholic and Pentecostal reformations in Latin America.
