Global Citizenship Education in Portugal
In summer 2022, Vikki Hengelbrok (C’23) conducted research at the Fundação Gonçalo de Silveira (FGS) through the Education and Social Justice Project, a joint project of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and the Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service at Georgetown University. During her three weeks in Lisbon, Portugal, she shadowed, interviewed, and participated in projects at FGS, a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing inequalities within their communities through the development of global citizenship and care for the common good. Her research focused on the methodologies and practices that FGS employs in order to foster global citizenship, while also examining the impact of the 48-year long dictatorship on the role of civil society organizations within the Portuguese education system.
