In April 2014 millions of pilgrims gathered in Rome for the canonization of two people whose reputations for personal holiness and effective leadership helped shape peace in our world. Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II served the Catholic Church at times of great cultural, political, and religious transformation, both inside and outside the Christian community. As a Vatican spokesperson put it, the testimonies of their lives, "completely dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel, shine in the church and reverberate in the history of the world as examples of hope and light." Fr. John O'Malley, S.J., and Gerard Mannion discussed these leaders of the modern Catholic Church and their impact on the Catholic Church and the world. Fr. Kevin O'Brien, S.J., vice president for mission and ministry, moderated the discussion.
