Guest Lecture: E.J. Dionne, Jr. on Religion and Politics in the Media

November 8, 2011
5:00 a.m. EST

E.J. Dionne, Jr., leading Washington Post columnist and expert on religion and United States politics, joined the class to discuss the challenges of reporting on religion and politics. Religion reporters must master the details of both politics and religious communities, as well as faith traditions ranging from Pentecostalism to Islam and everything in between. Reporters face a special challenge in getting beyond the culture wars polarization between religious conservatives and secular liberals. As new generations of evangelical leaders arrive on the political stage, along with new religious minorities, reporters have new opportunities to deepen coverage of religion and politics.
