Michael M.J. Fischer addressed issues of religion and violence. His fieldwork has focused on social change and religion in Jamaica, Iran, India, and the United States. In his book Iran: From Religious Dispute to Revolution (1980/2003), he explores Islam's role in Iran, especially in regard to the 1979 revolution.
