Location: Healy Hall Riggs Library Map

This event marks the publication of the new book The Problem of God: The Challenges of Faith, Religion, and Spirituality Today (2026) by Berkley Center Senior Research Fellow and Tagliabue Professor in Interfaith Studies & Dialogue Erin Cline. The Problem of God explores the challenges of religious belief, faith, and spirituality, and the responses to those challenges that are offered by different religious traditions throughout history, including why people believe in God or the infinite, how religious traditions engage questions raised by nonreligious perspectives, and how faith can help us to lead meaningful lives.

Cline will be joined by Rev. Otto Hentz, S.J.—who wrote the foreword for the book—for a conversation about the evolution of Georgetown University's iconic course of the same name. Berkley Center Director Thomas Banchoff will moderate the conversation, and it will also feature remarks by Interim President Robert Groves. A reception will follow.

This event is co-sponsored by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs and Georgetown University Press.
