Farai Maguwu is the director of Zimbabwe’s Centre for Natural Resource Governance. A
Zimbabwean national, he focuses today on issues for mining and social justice in Zimbabwe, including extensive research documenting abuses taking place in the Marange
diamond fields. He worked with Human Rights Watch researchers to document beatings, torture,
forced labor, and killings of local villagers at the hands of soldiers controlled by the Zimbabwe
African National Union-Patriotic Front, Zimbabwe’s ruling party. Maguwu was
educated in Zimbabwe and in Austria, with two master's degrees in Peace and Governance Studies;
he is currently working on his doctorate at the Centre for Civil Society at the University of Kwazulu
Natal. He is the winner of several human rights awards for his courage and determination.
